P.O.W. #21:

Cutting Edge

"Their greatest strength, the Clan love for individual battle, blinds them to tactics such as these. Watch and see!" ~Precentor Martial Anastasius Facht

<<May 8, 1999>>

It was quite a dilemma. The XP 90s could only be filled up at a normal station; the Super Charger 400s could be filled up at a normal station but were much easier filled up at a special supercharger station.

Hearing a noise behind you, you turn and spray the bushes with your 90's pulse fire, quickly flushing out the enemy and sending them running. Your two teammates look around the rest of the area to ensure there are no more surprises waiting.

This 3-on-3 match had been anything but ordinary. You were proud of your two new superchargers, but your opponents, ever contemptuous of them, had quickly set up defenses around the supercharger refill station, preventing you from getting more water. This left your team of three with only two easily refillable weapons, the new XP 90s. While you firmly believe the 90s a match for your enemies' two XP 70s, they also had a couple of XP 110s and would quickly out-gun you if you couldn't refill.

You glance around the tree you're using for cover and get a good look at the main area of the battlefield. There were still two normal refill ports available at the east and west end of the field, slightly sheltered by some bushes, but the two water spouts in the center had the supercharger refills attached, and it was these that were being guarded. The three trees forming a triangle supply the defenders with cover from any direction, and you can't figure out which weapons they're using. From the glade at the south you were in a more defensible position, but had no access to water.

To the north, the battlefield ends in a small stream - at only about 2 inches deep at the deepest sections, it isn't practical to refill there. There are small bushes scattered over the battlefield that disperse fire enough to provide cover if you don't stand too close to them - however, they're only about 4 feet tall, so they could be shot over.

One of the enemies steps quickly out of their covered position and fires off a quick burst towards you, which splashes harmlessly off the tree. Deciding to withdraw before they become more bold, you turn to your teammates and prepare your battle plan . . .

If this is a one hit kills game, I would give one guy a xp 90 and set him up between two bushes. I would put the other sc 400 on a strap on my back and the other 90 in my hands. me and the other guy with a sc 400 would hide in each bush. THe kid with the 90 would take pot shots at the other guys until one or more of them come and enter our little death trap. if one comes, we kill him, take his weapon, and then we charge the base from 3 sides. If two come, we kill them, take their weapons and charge the base from three sides.

Unfortunately, in addition to this being a fairly obvious trap, the XP 90 has a slight range disadvantage against other XP weapons and if you were standing still and close enough to shoot at them, they certainly wouldn't have to charge you to blast you back. I would also expect it to be extremely difficult to follow any of them out of a fortified position with the trees, particularly if they have one shread of common sense in their thick skulls.

I would take take the 2 400s and tell them to shoot only if nececery and to stay at our positin and I would fir around them to get them away from the water charger things. IF they came i would tell my comrads to yell wile i charged and make as much noise as they could. If they did not i would work my way in to rage of my 90 and i would fire at them to try to make them come over to me then gret the 400s to run and try to get the refill thing. they would probably send one guy at me though so i would try to take him out and if i did i would shoot gian and try to get them to send more men over. If i didn't i would have told my troops to charge and fire at them and to make lots of noise. Other wise i would retreat and probably lose:(

Your solution is extremely difficult to read, so I'm only able to evaluate what I think you're trying to say.

It looks like first your plan is to arm yourself with the XP 90s and leave your teammates with the SC 400s and tell them to defend themselves but fire as little as possible, and then you were going to try to run around your opponents' fortified position and try to get them to follow you.

There is almost no chance that they would follow you. According to this if they did your teammates would yell and try to make noise while you charged them. What you intend to accomplish with this I'm not sure, because charging three enemies, even with a minor distraction your teammates are creating, is suicidal. You'd be lucky to hit one of them before they got you, in which case you haven't really gained anything. Furthermore, because you're the one charging but you don't have any of the 400s to refill, you're not even getting any water for your team.

You go on to say that if they don't follow you you're going to start attacking them and trying to lure them away. Once again, you've got almost no chance of luring them away, and if there's one of you versus three of them (with cover to boot), you're going to come away in worse shape than they are unless you've got a great deal of luck riding on your side, which is never something to count on if you have any choice.

Everyone seems to be depending on luring them away, but no one seems to have a realistic plan for doing so.

First off, I'll assume that we are playing with ordinary rules (one hit kills, no stealing weapons, no physical contact). Since I own a super charger 400, I know it is not as hard to refill at a normal station as you make it seem. I'll also assume that there are no bases to protect and that you do not have any shields.

Assuming what you presume to be "ordinary rules" is not particularly safe, as I have never seen any such rules posted as "ordinary" anywhere, nor are they universally applied. Assuming no bases or shields when I haven't mentioned any goes without saying. As for refilling the 400, I wrote this POW before I discovered that the water reservoir was detachable, which is way it may seem from the writing that they are difficult to refill at a normal station. Still, the super charger refilling station offers a much more distinct advantage, as its much quicker and automatically pressurizes the weapon.

Okay, now that I'm done with the assumptions,we can start. First, refill all the weapons taking turns at one station while your other two team mates guard whoever is refilling. When you are done refilling send one man as a spy, with a 90, to try to see exactly where the enemies are and hopefully what weapons they have. The bushes seem like the best defensive position. If any of the bushes are in range of any of the enemies then send one man with a 400 to that bush with the other two with a 90 and a 400 standing well out of range of the enemies but without cover. Any number of things could happen now and I can't give an answer to all of them so do what seems best at the time.

"Any number of things"? Look, if you're already going to assume you can successfully refill all your weapons, scout our their exact positions and defensive arrangement and sneak someone within range without having to fight, then there's a small enough number of general events that could follow that you can give a plan for them.

The real problem, of course, is that three people is enough to see your man approaching, and as soon as he's within weapons range you've got a conflict on your hands. Also, if they wait through the entire procedure you described, they're not going to attack just because it looks like you're all finished.

Oh yeah, how are 3 guys going to use two 90's and two 400's?

My guess is that one person will carry two weapons but not use them at the same time, but any technique desired may be applied.

First of all, since you never stated in the POW how many XP 90's and SC 400's you have, I'm going to assume that you have teo of each, the same as the enemy.

I said exactly that:

You were proud of your two new superchargers, but your opponents, ever contemptuous of them, had quickly set up defenses around the supercharger refill station, preventing you from getting more water. This left your team of three with only two easily refillable weapons, the new XP 90s.

So if you assumed anything other than two of each, you'd have a very difficult time making an excuse for it.

Our guns are probably low on water, so I would send one person to a refill station at a time carrying two guns, with the other two people gaurding the enemie's base at oppisite ends.

First of all, two guys, each bearing one gun with only a small amount of water left, on opposite sides of a larger enemy force, have absolutely no chance of blocking them if they decide of attack. If you're going to try to intercept them when and if they do move, you need a better plan.

After all four guns are filled, I'd call my two men back a little ways to prepare for a charge. One of us could take point, with the other two to his sides behind him, covering him. When the enemy opens fire, we could at least fire at their positions to get them to fall back. We would have to keep going until inside the base. Once inside, we might be able to have an easier time shooting them, or force them to retreat. I know it's not a good idea to charge, but that's the only way i can think of.

~Aaron Marcum

All right, I should point out that you never move in formation without a darn good reason. This creates a problem because if your people are close together they present one large target for the enemy instead of a bunch of small ones, and also it makes it much easier to predict your movements. Also, the guys in back will have an awfully hard time of "covering" the man riding point.

Next, this isn't exactly a "base". There's three trees and two water spiggets. It would be an awfully bad idea for them to retreat from that under any circumstances, because even once you're in side they can just step around to the opposite sides of the trees and continue firing with benefit of cover. The 400s and 90s will run out of water before the 70s and 110s, which leaves you in a tough situation, although once you're inside you could use the super charger stations to refill during the battle.

Still, with three enemies from covered positions seeing you coming, getting in (especially in formation) is going to require running through a very thick barrage of water targeted at you very accurately, which is not recommended.

My answer would be to hold down the area that you are in and wait for them to get bored and come get you so you can have the refilling station and have three trees as cover but the problem with the trees is that they can use them as protection.

~Your Name Here

Your guys'll get bored as fast as them, which means you could potentially have a mutiny on your hands. Also, just because they get bored and decide to attack doesn't mean that you get their base.

Also, its hard to use the trees as cover when attacking because to do that you have to get right up next to your opponents, which is somewhat tricky to do without already being hit a lot more, and even once there you've only evened the odds.

By the way, you don't need to give me your email address, you just need to configure your Yahoo account so that it actually knows your name (which you were, I believe, legally required to do when you created it).

First of all I would have all 3 people attack from one side then 2 people would quickly go around the sides and drench the oposing team from the back. Then I would charge them and all 3 people would drench the last person.

If that didn't work I would send one person to sneak in and take a couple of their guns as quietly as possible, then we would use the original plan

~Unknown

First of all, if the original plan doesn't work, you're not going to get the chance to try something else. Furthermore, the way this is set up there is no conceivable way you could manage to steal one of their weapons, and even if you did you could only get one - the one that they weren't already using anyway.

As for the charge, your men would be shot down before you got up close enough to loop around to the sides and attack them without cover. That's why defenses are used, they INCREASE your battle power. If they made you more vulnerable they wouldn't exist.
