P.O.W. #28:

Unassailable Soldier

"Do not be deceived by illusions of invulnerability. You have been given advantages. But they are limited. It would be wise to recall that you are not gods. Not yet, that is . . ." ~ Unknown Transcendent

<<July 3, 1999>>

Thank goodness for this armor!

You aim more carefully than usual, hindered by the bulky equipment you are wearing but well aware of the tradeoffs.

You fire your backup CPS 1500, and then shift it to your left hand so you can pump with your right. When its at full pressure you switch it back to your right and secure the shoulder strap over the backpack strap of the Power Pak you wear on your back, which you're saving for the hard part.

As you moved past another two trees that line the path, a couple of opponents come out with 110s.

Not a threat.

The two fire. One of the blasts strikes the transparent faceplate suspended from your helmet and glances off. The other one hits the plastic bag with holes in it that you wear like a suit of armor, equally useless. You rake fire across them and take one out, scaring the other behind a tree.

The XP weapons couldn't do any damage unless they hit the back of your neck or your socks above your boots. You proceed further in.

The one you scared off regroups further down the path with three others, each brandishing a CPS 1500. This is where the danger is -- the CPS weapons should be strong enough to wear down the cardboard arm-guards, pierce the latex gloves, or rip open the plastic bag over your torso -- if they hit just right.

You swing your arms in and use your weapon as a shield to block the initial shots toward your chest and the spray glances harmlessly off. You lower your weapon to fire, but find that all four foes have already disappeared. Wary of a potential trap, you continue forward toward your target. You round a corner, and it is in sight . . . the primary enemy weapon stockpile.

If you could cause enough chaos here, it would cut off a supply of weapons and water and the rest of your team wouldn't have any trouble penetrating through the flag defenses and capturing. You flash a laser back toward the base to let them know you're making your move.

As you step near the small forested glade that comprises the defensive ring for the stockpile, you are suddenly faced with your biggest challenge yet. A large force of enemies make themselves visible through the foliage, most of them with CPS 2000s - the only weapon Larami ever discontinued for being too powerful.

You could try to run through, but you couldn't quite match their speed with the bulky armor and Power Pak on your back. You glance across the defensive barrier -- 8 enemies. Inside there would probably be about three people, quartermasters and/or people making use of the stockpile. No telling what they'd have access to.

Suddenly, you hear a noise behind yourself -- another 8 opponents, more lightly armed, have fallen in behind you.

Silently cursing yourself for not making sure to eliminate every enemy you encountered on your way here, you take one last look at the surrounding forest, hoping for a good idea. Time to spring into action . . .

I would turn my back to the hi powered weapons and start fireing at the low powered super soakers and use the back pack as a sheild then take the low powered guys out and run back to my team

~aar2005

I don't think its safe to ignore all those 2000s. With 8 of `em, there's a good chance they're going to find a vulnerable spot. The backpack of the Power Pak doesn't cover your entire back unless you have a very small torso, and your arms, ankles, and neck were identified as vulnerable.

Also, since you already signaled your team to let them know that you're attacking, its doubtful you could make it back in time to cancel the attack. By bailing out you're likely condemning a large portion of your team to elimination as they make an attack run without sufficient cover.

Firstly,I would turn my profile to the attackers with CPS 2000,in order to minimize my target area.As the other opponents are lightly armed, the priority is on the guys with CPS 2000 Then, I would start firing with the Power Pak at the opposing forces with CPS 2000,and try to dodge all their shots. Then, I would finish off the others easily.Since Power Pak needs no pumping, I wouldn't lose time.

Turning your profile to the enemy makes you a smaller target, but also hinders your aiming and knocks out one side of your peripheral vision. I would also recommend dumping the 1500 before you start trying to dodge eight 2000s. Also, with 16 enemies, you can't count on them to keep their distance; if they decide to swarm you, there's a chance they could get close enough to hit one of your vulnerable spots before you could get them.

Or, maybe I would call for reinforcements with the laser.

~Commander

Not likely. Lasers are only on or off (I think they make some now with changable caps that altar the shape, but if this is one of those you don't have time to fiddle with it). Your job was to cause a disturbance, so its likely the only signs you worked out were "I'm attacking now" and "I'm DOOMED!", and the latter is questionable, but I would recommend using it if possible

I would turn my back to the heavy armed poeple and shoot the lightly armed poeple with the power pack and then make a break for it back to the troops that I signaled before

~Your Name Here

Read the solution 2 up.

I would hold my weapon in front of me to block off as many shots as possible.  The CPS 2000s are my first targets.  I would then try to shoot any quartermasters of the stockpile.

Seeing as you're surrounded and haven't actually penetrated into the stockpile yet, I would put something in your plan about guarding your back. You should also note that you will have to ENTER the stockpile area before you can target quartermasters, unless they're foolish enough to come out and attack you. Its also worth considering the tradeoffs of using the 1500 as a shield versus discarding it in favor of the Power Pak, which does not require pumping but cannot be realistically used as a shield.

Then I would grab the largest Super Soaker in the pile that's loaded.  I would then send a stream of water over the remainder.  Any scattered opponents could be fatal, so I would, before venturing out to my team, send a backup signal.  Then I would search for any ambusher's left nearby.  The backups would be enough to take out any one else.

You're not supposed to WIN, and you're not going to; this is just a stockpile, not the enemy base. The idea is to lure as many opponents there for as long as possible to give the rest of your team an opening. IF your team planned a backup signal, I would strongly recommend AGAINST using it.

I should also point out that by the time your 1500 and Power Pak are spent, the chances that you're alive are slim to none, so I wouldn't worry about finding more weapons just yet.

We would take the biggest of the stock to the base.  That would leave smaller weapons to take later.

~XSciFiKidx

Once again, you're missing the point. This is a DIVERSION. Why else would you be the only attacker? If the goal was to take the stockpile, your original signal would already be bringing reinforcements.

for the pow#28 i would attack the 8 people with lighter weapons with the power pack and then make a move back to the rest of your team get them and have a full attack on them.

~Matt Boyle

The instant its clear you're not looking back, the CPS 2000s would tear you apart. Besides, you're the diversion; even if you did make it back in time to cancel the attack plan, I don't think you're going to get any help from your teammates with this assignment.

For this I would turn my back on the CPS 2000's and let them hit your back pack shoot the enimes with the weakess guns and then hopefully they will run them concentrate on the rest of your enmey.

~Jason Morgan

Have you ever actually SEEN the Power Pak? Eight CPS weapons are NOT all going to hit it. At long range, its hard to hit the backpack if you're TRYING (this has been tested); it doesn't even cover your entire back, let alone your head, neck, arms, and legs. You simply cannot rely on it for cover.

Now, if you decided to RUSH the weaker weapons with the intention of getting far enough away from the 2000s that they could only hit you with greatly diminished accuracy and power, this plan might be much more effective. Remember, the armor's not impenetrable, its merely tough.

I say, turn, fire on the bigger guys (bigger weapons), and if you have time, take out more of the other guys, and then run back to your comrads, if you have any. Chow. E-mail me back, k?

 ~Tate McCallum
Oh, mention my name k?

Would SOMEONE care to generate a plan slightly more complex than "kill THIS group first"? I realize I didn't give a lot of detail, but please TRY to make your solutions UNIQUE, ok?

Anyway, I don't think its a very bright idea to go charging towards the guys who can kill you more easily. There's something to be said for eliminating the larger threat first, and one must always (well, usually) applaud initiative, but that would be getting carried away. Remember, THEY have to pulverize you and rip through your armor; YOU merely have to HIT them. That lends itself quite well to maximum-range combat or, if worst comes to worst and they start to mob you, make sure you're BETWEEN them so they have to be careful about hitting each other, that should reduce their firing rate or effectiveness substantially.

However, I'd say that if these guys managed to surprise you, they're not close enough for that yet, which means you'd better come up with something a little more fancy than "shoot them."
