P.O.W. #33:

"Burden of Command"

"A great man is always willing to be little." ~Emerson

<<August 21, 1999>>

First of all, there was Truman. He wasn't very accurate with a gun, but man was he fast! He could run circles around anyone with a 110 while he was holding a 250.

Next there was Yuth. She was your deadeye. Could hit someone between the eyes from maximum range with any weapon, just so long as they didn't move around too much. Still, she took a while to aim, and wasn't that accurate when she was rushed.

Then there was Asth. Not only was he ambidextrous, but he'd made use of that skill so often that he could fire with reasonable accuracy with two heavy weapons at two separate targets. With light weapons, he was literally worth two men in a firefight.

And there was Unis. She was pretty typical, except of course that she could run across a gravel driveway without making a sound and, although you had never bothered to check, she could probably remain unseen lying down in the middle of a grass lawn when you were standing fifteen feet away, unless you were really looking for her.

Finally, there was you. You were sort of a jack of all trades.

Quite a team. You were going to need it -- the enemy had eight men.

You check over your team's inventory once more, making sure everything is in order. A 1500, 250, 175, 150, 110, 90, and Unis' favoriate 25, all in working order, fully loaded and pressurized, then loaded again if the pressure tank was separate.

The battle area was a sort of O shape, by virtue of a large house in the middle of it (off limits, of course). The northeast fourth of the O had a lot of thick bushes scattered around, with one meandering stone path through it. At the northwest, a quite large lawn was bordered by a row of trees with meshed branches on one side and the house on the other, with a dirt path between the lawn and the house, which connected to the stone path in the northeast.

In the southwest a driveway lead away from the house, splitting into two segments and then reconnecting so that cars could turn. A few meager trees were on the sides of the driveway, and in the center of the loop was a single tree dominating a tiny lawn, which was surrounded thinly by bushes and undergrowth. It was here that the only refill spigget was located. In the southeast, a few small circles of rose bushes dotted another lawn, and another dirt path connected to the other side of the stone. This was your present location, and your enemies would be starting off on the other side of the house.

"All right, everyone," you begin slowly, "here's what we're going to do . . ."

A. It would help if you described the enemies' skills and/or weapons.
B. You REALLY need to come up with some better names. Hehe.
C. Truman, Yuth, and Unis put together would have all the necessary reqs for a perfect sniper. However, you cant really have them traveling together because their advantages would pretty much be nulled by the friends around them that didn't have them. Doh.

Well, first of all, I would have myself wield the 1500, and Yuth would have the 150. Asth would have the 175 and the 110- two guns which pretty well cover most ground in terms of usefulness. Unis would have the 90 and the 25, and Truman would get the 250. We would, initially, head towards the northwest and go through the bushes, near but not on the "meandering stone path".

Unfortunately, due to the vagueness of the POW, I dont really know what they are trying to do- or what I am trying to do. So, I would probably just lay in wait for a while for my enemy by the stone path, and them if he came on the stone path we would massacre them from the safety of the bushes. However, I must assume he is smarter than this. So, assuming he is going through the bushes as well, we would pretty much commence in a basic firefight, but Unis would sneak around and attempt to hit them from the back. I am assuming she WILL NOT be detected.

Assuming absolutely nothing happened in the northeast, I would go over to the northwest and search for the enemies their, probably sending Truman out to recon. We wouldn't do very well in a fight on open grass due to our 2-1 outnumbering, so we would try to move quickly. Duck and weave, soldier.

Well, sooner or later we HAVE to find them, and if it is not in the north than I would just commence in a basic firefight with Unis slinking around the back to try to soak them before it is too late. Asth would be in front, with me behind and a little bit to the side of him (dont want to be too close, as clusters are good targets), and Yuth in the back firing over our heads. Once again, duck and weave.

They don't outnumber you quite 2:1, as you have five people, counting yourself. That's 8:5 -- slightly, but only slightly better. Of course, Asth is worth two, so that's more like 4:3 odds. Whatever.

Anyway, since it looks like you're planning to simply have a straightforward engagement with Unis sneaking around, I'd say you're faced with about even odds at victory or defeat, just dependent upon the luck of what happens. If you manage to pull off an ambush from the bushes, probably significantly better than that, but I should note that its much harder to take someone by surprise if they're only coming by because they're already looking for you.

Duck and weave doesn't work really well against a decent opponent, because it puts you in a predictable formation and its so easy to break apart (just send one person straight through the middle of the formation and all of a sudden your plan's out the window). The rest of your formation looks reasonably good, althoug you failed to note what Truman's going to be doing.

* First, I would distribute the weapons:
Asth- 1500/250
Unis- 25/90
Yuth- 150
Truman- 110
Me- 175

* Now I would assign duties to my team:
Asth- He'd be with me, looking for the enemy, and trying to get them as close as possible.
Unis- Because she is good at moving silently and hiding (supposedly)-and assigned with light weaponry- she should be hiding in the bushes on the northeast.
Yuth- Because she is good at aiming, I'd keep her near the trees on the northwest, so that, if Unis gets in trouble, she can help get the enemy away so she can escape.
Truman- Since he's fast, he should be a "hit & run" person. Just that he'd need to aim before attacking.
Me- I'd be with Asth. I'd help Truman from time to time.

In order for Unis to across the O to the northeast bushes, Asth, Truman and I would distract the enemy. Truman would go with Yuth, so he could perform his hit&run with ok visibility of the field.

Yes, I can see you, Asth, and Truman going out to "distract" eight enemies at once . . . while, meanwhile, Truman is also going with Yuth in the opposite direction to the sector where the enemy starts, but you're only concerned that Unis, who is heading in the same direction but only half as far, and is incredibly good at stealthing, will be caught.

With eight enemies, it's probably a bad idea to divide your forces up so much. Also, you don't have any specific maneuvers planned, so you're relying pretty much entirely on the skill of your troops to ensure victory. I also noticed that your general rabble-rousers are armed with the most powerful weapons while your sniper has a mediocre weapon and your assassin is stuck with the weakest two weapons in your arsenal.

I think you plan on doing all the fighting (along with Asth, of course), and assigned jobs appropriate to everyone elses' talents without really thinking about how useful those assignments would be to the team effort. Am I right?
