The prospect of the frequency determination phasers coupled with the Borg's technique of locking onto and draining shields has triggered increased research into this area. Currently, the best automatic-mutational shielding can switch frequencies after every time it is hit or the hull is damaged with only a 0.002 second gap during which the shields are off. Usually automatic-mutational shielding is set to rotate frequencies without prompting or attack every 30 minutes, just in case.
