One of the most life-saving uses for the transporters, once virtual shielding has replaced standard shielding, is the fact that an incoming torpedo could be locked onto with a transporter beam and transported to such a location as to no longer pose any danger to the ship (such as behind the ship, to the side, or behind the enemy ship which it would then crash into).
This sounds better than it is, however. Getting a transporter lock on an object moving a significant fraction of the speed of light (around 1/3) without matching velocity (which is impossible, the Federation limits sublight activities to 1/4 the speed of light (full impulse) to help prevent time drift) is tricky business an often requires more time than you have before the torpedo hits. In addition, transporters have a limited range (albeit a long one), and the defense goes down the minute transporters are off-ling.
