Technology Requirements

"Remember, every problem is solved by a temporal anomaly or by modifying the main deflector array."
~David Lennert (not in 7th Fleet)

It is, of course, of the utmost ease to invent a name for a new type of phaser or torpedo which inflicts increased damage. It is not difficult to invent a new type of hull armor. But here, we like to have some reason why it works -- and therein lies the difficulty.

In order for your technology to qualify, it is necessary to explain the why behind it. This is not to say that you have to give detailed, college-level scientific reasoning for the technology with exact blueprints. Neither is it to say that you must explain the prexisting technologies from Star Trek which it is based on (I don't want to hear "holoemitters function by . . .") except insofar as it is necessary to explain how it differs from your technology.

The idea is to just give a general reasoning behind your technology. If your new torpedo deisgn is more powerful, why is that? Is it because of a new type of warhead? A new delivery system? A new source of power? If your shields withstand more damage, why is that? Do they simply feed off of a larger power source, or are they more energy efficient in some way? Why is it that your ship can travel at super-high warp speed?

Despite the quotation at the top of the page, there are a wide variety of reasons something could work. If you've only got a preliminary idea, that's OK, its fine to ask for help developing it -- you can't be expected to forsee every possible problem it could generate . . . sometimes, technology goes into use despite major problems.

So, after reading that, do you think your technology holds up? We need all the help we can get! Send your ideas in!
